An NDIS group activity is when people with mental health needs and psychosocial disabilities come together as a group to connect and explore new experiences. These activities can be social, recreational, or community related experiences. They are conducted in a group setting and aim to provide opportunities for individuals to connect with their community, build social connections, establish daily routines, and participate in enjoyable and meaningful experiences.
At Karakan, we offer a range of group activities that may interest you, including cooking, fishing, gardening, meditation, and more. These activities are all about connecting with others, having fun, and feeling like you belong to a community. We customize the activities to fit your preferences and needs, so they are enjoyable and meaningful for you. By participating in these activities, you can experience improved well-being, strengthen your sense of connections and enhance your involvement within your community.
Currently Karakan group activities include programmes such as Cook-n-Connect and Flourish.
Cook n Connect is a 7-week community-based programme designed to support customers improve their overall well-being through nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices. Led by an experienced Chef and a Karakan team facilitator, individuals engage in practical cooking sessions in small groups. The program focuses on teaching affordable meal planning, nutritional eating, safe cooking practices, and basic food hygiene. This program promotes healthy eating, encourages social interaction, and enhances kitchen skills, all of which contribute to improved nutrition and enhanced mental well-being.
· Learn Essential Skills – The program equips you with essential cooking skills, teaching you how to prepare healthy, affordable meals. It is about becoming confident and independent in the kitchen.
· Nutrition – Cook n Connect emphasizes the importance of nutritional eating for overall well-being. You will learn how to make food choices that support both your physical and mental health.
· Safe Practices – The program teaches safe cooking practices and basic food hygiene, ensuring that you can cook confidently and safely at home.
· Creativity and Patience – Cooking allows for creativity and experimentation. It is a process that can help build patience, a valuable skill in all areas of life.
· Social Interaction – Cooking in small groups encourages social interaction. It is a chance to connect with others, share experiences, and build relationships.
· Enhanced Mental Well-being – The act of cooking, combined with the social interaction and the focus on healthy eating, contributes to improved mental well-being. It is about nourishing your body and your mind.
Flourish is a 12-week program that’s all about helping you on your journey to better mental health. It’s a program built on real-life experiences and solid evidence, and it’s made up of four main parts: a workbook for you to use, recordings you can listen to, group activities where you can learn and share, and coaching to guide you along the way.
The program is based on the Collaborative Recovery Model (CRM), which is a set of principles and steps that can help you make positive changes in your life, not just during the program, but even after it’s over.
One of the great things about Flourish is that it lets you keep track of your own progress. You’ll be able to see how far you’ve come using the Self-identified State of Recovery (SISR A & B) measures.
