Supported Independent Living(SIL)

Supported Independent Living and Short-Term Accommodation in Brisbane

Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living (SIL), an NDIS funded service, is one of the three home and living support services we provide at Karakan.

SIL is all about helping you live your life as independently as possible. It is a service funded by the NDIS, designed to assist you with daily tasks and activities. SIL is here to help you navigate these tasks with ease and confidence.

The three types of home and living support services include Supported Independent Living(SIL), Individualised Living Options(ILO) and Short-Term Accommodation(STA).

These services are designed to promote independence, enhance your quality of life, and support your mental health recovery.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is here to help you with everyday tasks. This could include things like preparing meals, cleaning your home, looking after your health. SIL is a support service that can be provided in a shared or individual home. Please note, SIL is aimed at providing assistance and encouraging self-reliance, rather than undertaking all the tasks on your behalf.

At Karakan, our mental health support workers are available 24/7, including overnight, to provide the support you need. The aim is to help you with daily tasks and build the skills you need to live your best life.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is for individuals with mental health needs and psychosocial disabilities who meet certain criteria. You might be eligible for SIL if you:

· Are 18 years old or older.

· Have NDIS funding in your plan that can be used for SIL services.

· Understand what kind of housing you need and are looking for housing options that suit you.

If you meet these criteria, SIL could be a good fit for you.

Step 1: Discovery

First, we will have an initial meeting to understand your needs. We will involve the right people in your support network from the start. We will assess your needs and the level of support you require.

Step 2: Exploration

Next, we will arrange a viewing to make sure you are comfortable with the arrangement. We will work with you to identify your personal goals and address any concerns or difficulties.

Step 3: Ongoing Support

Finally, we will assist you with moving and settling in your new home. We also provide ongoing support to ensure you feel comfortable and secure in your new environment. This includes 24/7 availability, including overnight, to provide the support you need. The aim is to assist you with daily tasks and build the skills you need to live your best life.

Our ultimate goal is to support you in becoming independent and living a fulfilling life.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are both essential components of the NDIS, but they serve different purposes:

  • SIL: SIL focuses on providing the necessary support and assistance to help you live independently in your chosen accommodation, regardless of whether it’s specialised or not.

  • SDA: Specialist Disability Accommodation, on the other hand, refers to housing specifically designed for people with  functional impairments or very high support needs. SDA aims to provide a physical environment that enables individuals to live comfortably and with the required level of support.
